Before we get to the point on religious themes, required a brief understanding of the view of the world in the drama ‘Goblin: The Lonely and Great God (referred to as Guardian).’
The plot of the drama is introduced by Wikipedia as follows:
Kim Shin is a goblin and protector of souls. He is the landlord of the Grim Reaper, who is in charge of taking deceased souls. Wanting to end his immortal life, Shin has been looking for his human bride, the only person who can end his life. Meanwhile, Ji Eun-Tak is a high school student who remains optimistic, despite the tragedies and difficulties she has experienced in her life. She summons the goblin by change, and through various encounters, ends up falling in love with him. Sunny is a chicken restaurant owner, whose beauty is undeniable. These four characters’ lives took a serious of twists and turns when they intertwined.

Here are main characters leading the drama.
Kim Shin, who was an unbeatable general in Goryeo Dynasty about 900 years ago but killed by his king obsessed with jealousy, becomes an immortal Dokkaebi (Goblin in Korean). He has to wait for a human bride to end his life. One night, Shin saves a dying pregnant woman who is destined to die. Therefore, the Grim Reaper (Wang Yeo) cannot find her that he has to take as the dead. In the current time, they live together in Kim Shin’s house coincidentally.
Ji Eun-Tak is the daughter of the dying pregnant woman, and she can see ghosts because she is originally destined to be dead with her mother but is survived thanks to the help of Dokkaebi, Kim Shin and supposed to be Dokkaebi’s human bride. In the current time when she meets Kim Shin, she is a high school student. Kim Sun is another female character, and she is the owner of a chicken restaurant where Ji Eun-Tak works as a part-time job.
